11h00-12h30 Round table 1
Why is rail the solution to decarbonise transport?

Greenhouse gas emissions from transport continue to rise. Not only is rail transport the mode that generates the least negative externalities, but it continues to further improve its environmental performance thanks to innovation (hybrid trains, on batteries, hydrogen ...). The round table will discuss ways to maintain and further increase the competitiveness of rail transport in comparison with other more polluting transport modes.

Speakers:
  • Laurence Tubiana, CEO, European Climate Foundation (confirmed)
  • Mauro Petriccione, Director General, DG CLIMA, European Commission (confirmed)
  • Clément Beaune, Minister of State for European Affairs (confirmed)
  • Anna Deparnay-Grunenberg, Member of the European Parliament (confirmed)
  • Richard Lutz, CEO, Deutsche Bahn (confirmed)
  • Christophe Fanichet, CEO, SNCF Voyageurs (confirmed)
  • Thierry Mallet, CEO and Chairman, Transdev (confirmed)
12h30-14h00 Lunch at the Innovation Forum
14h00-15h30 Round table 2
Digitalisation and innovation: how to build the rail system of the future?

The development of rail is part of the solution to reduce transport emissions. To increase the volume of rail transport,
the capacity and efficiency of the rail system must be increased, and it must be modernised.

This round table aims to identify priority technological and innovation levers that can make it possible to achieve this,
in particular:
  • Modernisation of the network: deployment of ERTMS, Centralised Trafic Control, bypass of metropolises,
    railway nodes, intermodal terminals
  • Efficiency gains thanks to innovative technologies: digital train, autonomous train, digital automatic coupling,
digital platforms, digital capacity management/TTR, predictive maintenance, 5G, etc.
  • Gains in customer experience and quality of service: MaaS, ticketing modernisation, new passenger services
Speakers:
  • Carole Desnost, Director Technologies, Innovation and Projects, SNCF (confirmed)
  • Libor Lochman, Counsellor for EU affairs to the CEO, CD (confirmed)
  • Laurent Bouyer, President and CEO, Siemens Mobility France (confirmed)
  • Sacha Honnert, CEO, Rhenus Rail (confirmed)
  • Carlo M Borghini, Executive Director, Europe’s Rail (confirmed)
  • Carlos Morais Pires, Member of the Cabinet of Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth (confirmed)
  • Karima Delli, Chair of the European Parliament's Transport Committee (confirmed)
15h30-15h45 Innovation interlude
15h45-16h15 Coffee break
16h15-17h45 Round table 3
How to finance tomorrow’s rail system?

The previous round table identified investment needs in technologies that can enable rail to develop massively and contribute to reducing transport emissions.

This round table examines the topic of financing these investments. It aims to:
  • Make a diagnosis of the financing needs and the necessary support at national and European level
  • Examine best practices
  • Highlight the societal benefits of investing in the rail system
  • Identify potential new resources (ETS revenues, ecological taxation)
Speakers:
  • Benoît Thirion, Partner, Altermind (confirmed)
  • Herald Ruijters, Director of Investment, Innovative and Sustainable Transport, DG MOVE (confirmed)
  • Marc Papinutti, Director General for Infrastructure, Transport and the Sea, Ministry of Ecological Transition (confirmed)
